It was late Sunday evening when Arya made her way into her dark, empty townhouse. She had been working extra long hours at the ministry lately, she had been on edge ever since Wyatt's appearance in her office earlier this week. Arya and Alex got him settled into one of the extra professor's quarters at Hogwarts while they figured out what was happening in the United States. Leaning against the white door she heaved a sigh, thinking to the last time she had come into her home this late. That night she wasn't alone; that night Mason had been with her, they had just gone out to a local muggle pub. Occasionally, they liked to forget they stresses they had at the ministry, and be muggles away from it all for a night.
That was two months ago, the night before he had to leave on an assignment that even she wasn't allowed to know the details of. Two months since she had seen Mason smile or run his hands through his hair as he read through a particularly difficult case report. She kicked her heels off and made her way into the kitchen to pour a glass of wine from the refrigerator when the light turned on. Startled, she pulled her wand out, moving into a defensive stance. Once her eyes adjusted to the light she saw someone standing on the other side of the island, Mason. His brown hair had grown out over his ears, a slight beard had begun to grow and he looked ragged, almost as ragged as she felt. He stared at her with his tired smirk, "Hey Ree," he said making his way toward her. Coming to her senses, she dropped her wand to the tiled floor and wrapped her arms around his neck, a small laugh of happiness coming from her for the first time in two months.
Mason had used the key Arya gave him over six months ago for the first time tonight. He missed her when he was on assignment. He had gone to the States to help the magical law enforcement in controlling the chaos and possibility of exposure. He had been gone for two months, it had been exactly two months since he stood in this same spot watching Arya pour a glass of wine after a night of frivolity. Tonight did not have the same lighthearted feeling, Arya looked exhausted, her chestnut hair tied on top of her head, her suit blazer sitting sloppily on her shoulders. "Hey Ree," as she threw her arms around he stumbled back slightly before resting his head against hers, "I missed you," placing a small kiss on her head.
Taking a step back, he kept his hands on her shoulders, "I take it the President made it safely?" Tilting his head slightly, "We lost contact, but we had advised him to contact you if that happened." He watched her nod as she shrugged her blazer off and finished pouring her glass of wine, grabbing another glass for him, coming around to sit next to him at the island.
"Wyatt is at Hogwarts," she said calmly, "He'll be safe there, he's with Alex, Danny and Ben." Shifting in her chair, she curled her legs underneath her and turned toward him, "Is that where you were this whole time? Protecting the United States President?"
He rested a hand on her knee rubbing his thumb along it softly, "Yes, among others. Once he was able to escape the others were more comfortable going into hiding and I was able to come home." He pulled her from her chair and into his lap, placing another small kiss on her hairline, "Danny and Ben are here? When did that happen?"
Arya smiled as Mason kept constant contact with her, it told her he had missed her as much as she had him. Laying her head on his shoulder, she explained, "Alex asked Ben to teach Muggle Studies, to give a new perspective on the subject for the students. But I think there's more going on, Alex is just protecting me. He wouldn't ask Danny here under the guise of needing a professor if something wasn't wrong." She attempted to stifle a yawn, "He doesn't actually need a Muggle Studies professor."
She shakes her head, "I'm sorry, you're finally home and I'm here complaining about not being kept in the loop" Tears start to flow as the stress of the week starts to weigh on her. Mason's hand curls under her chin, his thumb running below her eyes catching the tears. "You're exhausted Ree, let's get you to bed."
She started to get off his lap and he tightened his arms around her, picking her up and carrying her up the flight of stairs to her room. After getting back into their nighttime routine, they got into bed and Arya slept soundly for the first time in two months.
