Lesson One: Severing Charm

Recommended Posts

Alexander entered the greenhouse and took a deep breath, he loved the smell of fresh dirt and plants. He made his around the greenhouse towards the front, taking in his surroundings. With the flick of his wand, a Moly plant appeared at each workspace.

Finally at the front of the room, Alexander turned to blackboard and wrote:

Severing Charm
Diffindo

Satisfied, he moved to his desk and awaited for the students to arrive.

Victoria was actually on time for a lesson, that a rarity for her. Entering the greenhouse and glanced around and breathed in the scents. Victoria liked the smell of old books a lot better then this. She made her way to a seat in the middle of the right hand side of the classroom and removed the materials from her bag. "Hello, Professor." She greeted, ready for the lesson to begin.

Tina was a little disappointed to learn that she wasn't the first student to class as she sat herself at the farthest end of and organized her materials. It wasn't that she disliked other students, especially when she wanted to make friends. She just found it difficult to interact with others due to her subpar social skills. She glanced at her fellow Ravenclaw, considering approaching her and going outside her comfort zone. Yet fear managed to hold her back. What if she was mean? What if she ended up hating her? What if she didn't share her love for all school subjects? She decided it was best to stay put and admire the magical energy that she felt when she was surrounded by plants.

Alexander glanced up from the parchment he had been reading once he noticed the students were beginning to arrive. He was excited for the first lesson of the term, the beginning of term energy from the students always helped with Alexander first lesson nerves.

"Hello Miss Rose, a pleasure to see you." Alexander replied to Victoria. He also nodded to the other Ravenclaw student that entered the room. "Let's go ahead and the lesson started." Alexander smiled.

"Today we will be covering the severing charm. It is used for a variety of purposes, but for today we will using it to the prune the plants in front of each of you. The incantation is diffindo and the movement is a sort of the letter N." Alexander instructed and performed the spell on the plant on his desk, a dead branch was severed from the plant and it landed on the desk.

"For today you will be practicing the charm. I will be walking around the classroom to watch and answer any questions you have. You may begin." Alexander smiled. He looked forwarded to seeing how the students would perform.

It still amazed Victoria that Headmaster knew most of the students names. She had only seen him once at the beginning of term feast, and he remember who she way. After studying the way the professor performed the charm, she took a few notes on her parchment. Then it was time for the practice to begin. Victoria took a look around and hoped that this practice would go better then it had in her charms class.

"Diffindo" Victoria performed and there was a slit on the branch of her plant. It was a much better start already. She needed to concentrate more.

"Diffindo" Victoria called again and this time a branch was cut clear from the plant. She had done it, Victoria could not believe it! She smiled and looked around to see how everyone else had progressed so far.

Meticulous as always, Tina recalled the professor's words in her head. Diffindo. Diffindo. Diffindo.

Remembering that improper use of the spell could cause injury or even death, Tina hesitated, dropping her wand on the table. What if she accidentally messed up and hurt somebody? She felt the pressure mount as it clutched her chest when she noticed the Ravenclaw she had saw earlier looking around. What if they saw her mess up? Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath. She couldn't spend her time worrying about things that may not happen. She had to prove that she wasn't a scaredy cat - and not just to her classmates.

Diffindo. Diffindo. Diffindo. She opened her eyes. Diffindo. Diffindo. Diffindo. She grabbed her wand and practice the wand movement, trying to keep her wand as steady as possible. Then she murmured, "Diffindo." Her spell swiftly cut the plant's most outermost leaves, vigorously. Her eyes widen slightly by the aggressiveness of her spell. She had wanted to prove herself so much that she had nearly hurt the plant. Hanging her head, she whispered to the plant, "I'm so sorry."

After glancing around the room, she saw that many people were progressing really well. She decided it was time to try her hand once more at the spell. Aiming her wand at one of the branches she moved in an outline of the letter N. "Diffindo." Victoria commanded and another clean cut was produced. She had to try hard not to cry at her excitment. She decided she should probably call the professor over. Raising her hand, Victoria called. "Professor, I think I have done." She then waited for the professor to come and examine her work.

Jason wrote the topic on his parchment and the notes on the board. It was now time to put the lesson into practice. Jason took his wand and pointed it at the plant. "Diffindo." Jason commanded and a clean cut was produced where he had pointed his wand. Jason smirked, perfect he thought to himself. He tried the spell again it produced the same affect. Jason raised his hand to call the professor over.
